About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) is the second major Islamic holiday and is considered the more important of the two Eids. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Before Ibrahim could complete the sacrifice, God provided a ram in his son's place. To commemorate this, Muslims who can afford it sacrifice a livestock animal and distribute the meat among family, neighbors, and those in need. Eid al-Adha also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan (the month of fasting), while Eid al-Adha commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son and coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage. Eid al-Adha is considered the greater of the two Eids.

What is qurbani?

Qurbani is the ritual sacrifice of a livestock animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel) during Eid al-Adha. The meat is divided into three portions: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need.
