The Formula

Formula
Age = Current Date − Birth Date

Days = (Current Date − Birth Date) in calendar days
Hours = Days × 24
Minutes = Hours × 60
Worked Example
Born: March 15, 1990 → Today: March 15, 2026
Age = 36 years exactly
= 36 × 365.25 ≈ 13,149 days
= 315,576 hours

How the Age Calculator Works

Enter your date of birth and optionally a target date — it defaults to today. The calculator shows your exact age broken down into years, months, days, hours, and even minutes if you want that level of detail. It also tells you how many days remain until your next birthday, which is genuinely useful for planning. The calculation accounts for leap years and variable month lengths automatically.

Age Calculation and Leap Years

Leap years add a small complication to age calculations. A standard year has 365 days, but a leap year has 366. Leap years occur in years divisible by 4, with an exception for century years — those must be divisible by 400 to qualify. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. Our calculator handles all of this correctly, giving you a precise count of days rather than a rounded estimate.

Fun Uses Beyond the Obvious

Age calculators are useful for more than just knowing how old you are. They are commonly used to verify age eligibility for things like driving, voting, drinking, Medicare, and Social Security benefits. Parents use them to track developmental milestones. Genealogists use them to estimate birth years from historical records. HR departments use them for retirement eligibility calculations. And plenty of people just use them to find out exactly how many days old they are — which is a surprisingly satisfying number to know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my exact age calculated?

Your age in years is the number of complete birthdays you have had. Months and days are calculated by counting the remaining months and days between your last birthday and today. The calculator also shows your age in days, hours, and minutes.

How old am I in days?

Multiply your age in years by 365.25 (to account for leap years) for a quick estimate, or use this calculator for the exact count. The average 30-year-old has lived approximately 10,958 days.

What day of the week was I born?

Enter your birth date in the calculator and it will show your birth day of the week along with your age. The most common birthday months in the US are August and September, reflecting conceptions around the holiday season.

What is a half birthday?

A half birthday falls exactly six months after your birthday. If you were born on January 15, your half birthday is July 15. Some families celebrate half birthdays for young children, particularly those born close to major holidays.

How do different cultures calculate age?

In most Western countries, you are 0 at birth and turn 1 on your first birthday. In traditional East Asian reckoning, you are 1 at birth and gain a year each Lunar New Year. This means you could be 1-2 years older by traditional East Asian reckoning than by Western calculation.

Why does my age in days seem so large?

Time adds up quickly. A 30-year-old has lived nearly 11,000 days. A 50-year-old has lived over 18,000 days. Viewing your age in days, hours, and minutes can be a useful perspective on how precious each day is.
